August 24 – Review by Stefan – DISSIDENT AGGRESSOR – DEATH BEYOND DARKNESS (Divebomb Records)

Dissident Aggressor was founded in Sacramento, CA sometime in the year 1987. Guitarist Lloyd Powers, drummer Darren Minter and Chris Brown (bassist) had already played in another band called Hans Crypt. Guitarist and vocalist Dale Roberts had already rendered his services with the band XXX. This quinete started writing a first number of songs, afterwards aforementioned bassist left the DA camp and was replaced by Hans Crypt’s rhythm guitarist Dennis Lindner who swapped his guitar skills for a solid bass. As soon as he was ingrained in the band, plans were made for the recording of a first rough garage demo. And they did well, Dissident Aggressor even got to share the stage with Bay Area Thrash Metal heroes, Heathen. The peculiarity of this was that drummer Darren Minter was allowed to fill the Heathen ranks afterwards. So the rest of the guys have been designated to start looking for a replacement who was eventually found by the name of Paul Lujan.

With this line up they practiced very hard, even up to 5 hours a day, to record their first proper demo (1990) the band went for three days to the Prairie Sun Records (Laaz Rockit, Forbidden, Exodus, Possessed,…), produced by Frank Hannon (Tesla), engineered by Steve Fontano and Marc Reyburn. A second, more thrashy demo saw daylight two years later on, once again produced by Frank Hannon. More and more posters appeared on which Dissident Aggressor was mentioned, through space and time they shared the stage with famous acts like Armored Saint, Death Angel, Pantera and plenty of others, more good news came their way when world famous labels like Crysalis and Warner Bros. turned out to be interested in the five guys from Sacramento CA, Dissident Aggressor ! What happened remains an open question for me, the fact is that it never led to a record deal. Were their management a little overconfident those days ? I don’t know, but it’s possible. Sad but true, in 1993, the band called it quits… a loss for all those hooked on Underground US Thrash Metal ! READ MORE…
