July 03 – Review by Holger B. – PSYCHOTIC WALTZ – THE GOD-SHAPED VOID (Inside Out Music)

I still remember as if it was only yesterday: It was in November 1990 when I bought the first Psychotic Waltz album “A Social Grace” unheard on CD due to a record criticism in a fanzine. Back then I was staying with a friend in Recklinghausen and one morning we drove by car to the neighboring town to a small but fine record store. Hoping to get a copy there. The joy was great when I actually held a CD in my hands.

The initial spark for this kind of music was for me the first Dream Theater, which I had bought a few months earlier. Up to this disc I knew progressive rock, but progressive metal “appeared” in my musical universe only with that dream theater debut. Until then, I had spent 12 years as a heavy metal fan and, in addition to my faves from Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Ozzy, Ratt, Metallica, Savatage and Malice, I even liked harder stuff like Slayer, Venom and Megadeth.
