July 15 – Review by Officer Nice – MAELSTROM – OF GODS AND MEN (Independent / Sure Shot Worx)

I guess every Metal fan has its own preferred subgenres and in my case it is a very wide range. I can listen to Black and Death Metal but I really love AOR as well. The advantage of Metal is that you can lose all of your emotions into it…as long as you can find the right songs for it. Not every musician is after all able to touch your soul. What I love the most is the typical old school US Power Metal with high pitched vocals. Bands like Helstar, Sanctuary and Liege Lord pulled me into it and opened a big underground Metal scene to me. After all these years I can tell I know something about US Metal, although it is impossible to have all the knowledge about it.

Maelstrom for example… I read on the biography this band never released their full-length debut album before disbanding in 1994. To be honest I even never heard about these guys. Listening to this one, and again, and again and finally again makes it actually regretful this band never came up with their debut so many years ago.  To be honest, when I heard this record at first I wasn’t convinced at all. But after several spins I really discovered this band and I heard actually remarkable and spectacular things. I found out that, if it was 1994, this band should have been before its time.
